HIV/AIDS poster for the American Muslim Community: In response to the
ongoing need for targeted HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention materials in the Muslim community
several focus groups involving imams and members of the Islamic center were organized. Funded
by the CT Department of Public Health - AIDS Division with a grant from the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC) this poster and accompanying prevention booklet built off of direct input from
the community and focused on select quotes from the Qur-an to target issues of personal risky
behavior resulting from addiction and undisciplined, non prayerful lifestyles. The poster and
related materials have been successfully disseminated and received by both the American Muslim
community and Muslim inmates in CT and several other states since its release in 2000.
'Peace' poster series: CCfH designed these posters without its usual
focus group element. They were designed to respond to the 9/11 attacks on America. Their
message of unity is intended as a universal statement of hope, inspiration and peaceful
coexistence. The historic similarities and shared roots of the world's three leading
monotheistic religions - so often in conflict - are captured by these posters.
These posters were produced in collaboration with the CT Department of
Public Health - AIDS Division and the Connecticut GMOC with funding provided by the Centers
for Disease Control (CDC). With HIV/AIDS cases on the increase again among a number of
minority populations in CT, CCfH was asked to develop some culturally sensitive educational
materials targeting men who have sex with men and specifically gay men of color. The
non-stereotypical, universal message of personal risk and responsibility contained in these
HIV/AIDS awareness posters was crafted over several intense months of focus group discussion,
feedback, and involvement with the members of the CT GMOC.
